Rhodes Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarship, named after Cecil John Rhodes, is an international postgraduate award for selected foreign students to study at the University of Oxford. It was the first large-scale program of international scholarships, and is widely considered the "world's most prestigious scholarship" by many public sources such as Time, Yale University Press, The McGill Reporter, and Associated Press.

In his last will and testament, he provided for the establishment of the famous Rhodes Scholarship, the world's first international study program. The scholarship enabled students from territories under British rule, formerly under British rule, and from Germany, to study at the University of Oxford.

University and college fees are paid by the Rhodes Trust. In addition, Scholars receive a monthly maintenance stipend to cover accommodation and living expenses. Although all scholars become affiliated with a residential college while at Oxford, they also enjoy access to Rhodes House, an early 20th-century mansion with numerous public rooms, gardens, a library, study areas, and other facilities.

Known as an old and prestigious international graduate scholarship, the Rhodes Scholarships are administered and awarded by the Rhodes Trust, which was established in 1902 under the terms and conditions of the will of Cecil John Rhodes, and funded by his estate under the administration of Nathan Rothschild. Scholarships have been awarded to applicants annually since 1902 on the basis of academic achievement and strength of character. There have been more than 7,000 Rhodes Scholars since the inception of the Trust. More than 4,000 are still living.

Rhodes wanted to expand the British Empire because he believed that the Anglo-Saxon race was destined to greatness. In his last will and testament, Rhodes said of the British, "I contend that we are the finest race in the world and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race. Just fancy those parts that are at present inhabited by the most despicable specimens of human beings what an alteration there would be if they were brought under Anglo-Saxon influence, look again at the extra employment a new country added to our dominions gives." He wanted to make the British Empire a superpower in which all of the British-dominated countries in the empire, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Cape Colony, would be represented in the British Parliament. Rhodes included American students as eligible for the Rhodes scholarships. He said that he wanted to breed an American elite of philosopher-kings who would have the United States rejoin the British Empire. As Rhodes also respected the Germans and admired the Kaiser, he allowed German students to be included in the Rhodes scholarships. He believed that eventually the United Kingdom (including Ireland), the USA, and Germany together would dominate the world and ensure peace.

In Secret Records Revealed: The Men, the Money and the Methods behind the New World Order (1999), D.L. Cuddy documents that the idea of a New World Order is particularly associated with a number of British oligarchs and writers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. British diamond-and gold-magnate, Cecil Rhodes, seems to have had an especially significant role in both formulating the concept and in helping to implement it, through, amongst other things, his establishment of Rhodes Scholarships to top international scholars, such as President Bill Clinton (Rhodes Scholar, 1968). In his “Confession of Faith”, Rhodes stated his vision as follows:

Why should we not form a secret society with but one object the furtherance of the British Empire for the bringing of the whole uncivilized world under British rule for the recovery of the United States for the making of the Anglo-Saxon race but one Empire . . . the (secret) Society should inspire and even own portions of the press, for the press owns the minds of the people.

In 1890, Rhodes wrote to his close friend W.T. Stead that: The key of my idea is a Society a secret one, gradually absorbing the wealth of the world Fancy the charm to young America to share in a scheme to take the government of the whole world!”

It is important to note that Rhodes’ extraordinarily successful career in the businesses of extracting gold and diamonds from South Africa was financially underwritten by the Rothschild banking family, which at the turn of the 20th century, was reported to control fully half of the world’s wealth.

So, using his great fortune, Rhodes formed his “Society for the Elect” in 1891. Rhodes was “General”, while Lord Milner, William Stead and Lord Escher formed the executive committee. “The Group” as it was also called, was dominated by a financial elite and was surrounded by a “Circle of Initiates” or “Association of Helpers”, later organized into the Round Table Groups of London by Lord Milner. One of the first projects of this secret society was to involve Britain in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899, in which South Africa was intentionally destroyed so that it could be rebuilt by London financiers, who, as it happens, were associated with the secret group. (This strategy of destroying and then rebuilding countries has been used time and time again by the world’s ruling elite, most recently in Iraq.)

In 1909, America’s New Carnegie Institute (founded in 1902 by Daniel Coit Gilman of Yale’s Skull and Bones elite secret society) published “Cecil Rhodes and His Scholars as Factors in International Conciliation”. The paper, authored by the first Oxford Secretary to the Rhodes Trust, Francis Wylie, suggests that in order to develop “so great a Power as to hereafter render wars impossible”, a (secret) society be formed “to this end”, “co-extensive with the British Empire, preaching imperial ideas, and effecting its objectives through the control of education”. He goes on to state that these objectives should be achieved in an “unobtrusive” manner, with influence “as subtle as it is leisurely”.

So the Rhodes Scholarships is for the world elite.
